SURVIVORSHIP AFTER CANCER AND END OF LIFE CARE
Rapid Review of Research into Survivorship after Cancer and End of Life Care
During 2009/10 NCRI took stock of progress made since the 2004 NCRI report on Supportive and Palliative Care (SuPaC) Research in the UK, and has considered how best to develop and sustain research in survivorship after cancer and end of life care going forward.
A report, including an action plan, of the Rapid Review, was published in November 2010.
The action plan which has been developed following extensive discussions with researchers, consumers and research funders promotes the use of existing funds to support investigator-led research, identifies some areas of specific research need and the need to enhance collaboration amongst researchers, funders and the research networks in the NHS.
The UK Steering Group for research in survivorship after cancer and end of life care and the NCRI will support research in these areas through the coordination and integration of the three strands of the action plan.
The NCRI Grantsmanship Gateway is an outcome of the NCRI Rapid Review of research in survivorship after cancer and end of life care, and aims to assist early career researchers to identify sources of research funding and signposts expert advice on grant application development. Although primarily aimed at researchers in the survivorship after cancer and end of life care fields, the Gateway contains a lot of generic information that could be applicable to all areas of research.
Consumers were actively involved in the Rapid Review. The report ‘Patient and Public Involvement in Cancer Research’ was drafted by consumers involved in the Rapid Review meeting in July 2009. Consumers continue to be involved in meetings and discussions to take forward the Rapid Review action plan. The UK Steering Group for research in survivorship after cancer and end of life care includes consumer members.
