Background
A 72 year old man presented an ungual problem. He had been treated for hormone-resistant prostate adenocarcinoma with bone metastases with Docetaxel
(TAXOTERE intravenous perfusion) at a rate of 75 mg/m2 every third week for 6 months. Ungual problems had appeared in the 3rd month of chemotherapy. These problems resulted in fragility and onycholysis of the ungual bed on all the nails of the fingers and toes, as well as cutaneous hypersensitivity in the peri-ungual area.
Method
In order to reduce these ungual symptoms, EVONAIL was applied morning and night on all the nails and their edges. This solution leaves an invisible matt film that takes 2 to 3 minutes to dry. EVONAIL is a film-forming solution made from a Totum Lithium-Strontium-Manganese formula, naturally present in Evaux les Bains spring water.
Results
When examined on the 36th day after application began, the onycholysis was greatly reduced on all nails treated with EVONAIL. Furthermore, the patient reported a significant reduction in peri-ungual pain. No intolerance to EVONAIL was reported by the patient during the application period.
Conclusion
The introduction of an effective product without side effects for topical use in a reasonable time span of 5 weeks for treating ungual changes and simultaneous
peri-ungual hypersensitivity observed during chemotherapy offers patients a significant functional and aesthetic benefit, by improving quality of life and a better adherence to anti-cancer treatments.
