Introduction

Mike Bennett
University of Lancaster, UK

Despite the widespread availability of effective analgesia, cancer pain remains prevalent and is often undertreated. This session will examine emerging strategies in cancer pain management that have the potential to improve clinical outcomes in three important areas. First, the role and impact of patient based education; secondly, modern approaches to cancer pain assessment and classification; and finally, a discussion of how genetic variations might lead to tailoring of analgesic drugs for specific patients.
