Howard Scher is Chief of the Genitourinary Oncology Service at the Sidney Kimmel Center for Urologic and Prostate Cancers, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where he is the first incumbent of the D Wayne Calloway Chair in Urologic Oncology. He is also Professor of Medicine at the Joan and Sanford I Weill Medical College of Cornell University.
Howard Scher earned his undergraduate degree from Bates College in 1972 and his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine in 1976. He completed an internship, residency, and chief residency in Medicine at Bellevue Hospital Center in New York and a fellowship in Medical Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
His work focuses on the development of mechanism-based treatments for prostate cancer, including novel drugs targeting the androgen receptor and other signaling pathways that contribute to prostate cancer growth. He has a particular interest on non-invasive methods to assess the pharmacodynamic effects of these agents, the identification and validation of biomarkers, and on clinical trial design.
As a clinical researcher, he has been the lead investigator for numerous studies in prostate cancer and is widely published in such peer-reviewed journals as Cancer Research, Clinical Cancer Research, Journal of Urology, and Journal of Clinical Oncology. He serves on the editorial boards of Prostate Cancer and Prostatic Diseases, The Oncologist, and The Prostate. His numerous honors and awards include the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Teaching Excellence Award, the Donald S Coffey-Prostate Cancer Foundation Physician-Scientist Award, and the Distinguished Alumnus Award, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He is the Principal Investigator of the Prostate Cancer Clinical Trial Consortium sponsored by the Department of Defense.
An internationally recognized expert in the development of new therapies, Howard Scher is regularly sought for participation on national advisory panels, including the US Food and Drug Administration Public Workshop on Clinical Trial Endpoints in Prostate Cancer. He is an active member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Urological Association, and the American Association of Cancer Research, among other professional organizations.
