Bursaries for patients and carers

A limited number of bursaries are available to cancer patients, survivors, carers and others in the UK affected by a cancer diagnosis. Applicants should have an established interest in cancer research whether through NCRI or some other organisation

The NCRI Cancer Conference bursary award is intended to support individuals directly affected by the experience of cancer who are involved in cancer research and who wish to learn from and contribute to the Conference. However, there is a limited budget and we are not able to guarantee that all applicants will be awarded a bursary. Applicants are therefore encouraged to explore other possible sources of funding (for example, local Consumer Research Panels, Clinical Trials Units or Experimental Cancer Medicine Centres). Applicants are also encouraged to look at the Conference Programme to decide which days are most relevant to their own needs and interests.

While much of the Conference programme is aimed at professional delegates, some educational sessions are targeted to a lay audience of those wishing to learn more about research and to become (more) involved in the research process. Others, while having medical or scientific content, are of interest to individuals who have learnt about research through their experience as patients or carers. Some sessions are organised by patients and carers especially to cater to the interest of that group and there is plenty of time during the programme breaks and at social events for networking with researchers, clinicians and other patients and carers involved in research.

Patients and carers are involved at every level in the work of the NCRI and its associated activities. One of the main successes in our patient and public involvement work is the NCRI Consumer Liaison Group (CLG) which has over 60 members, many of whom are cancer patients, survivors, as well as carers.
