The NCRI Pathology Group is a multi-disciplinary community of researchers and consumers dedicated to changing the way pathologists engage with, conduct and are recognised for their work in clinical trials in the UK. The group works closely with clinical research networks, funders and national and international researchers to develop research to improve outcomes for cancer patients and identify areas of unmet need.

The group routinely identifies strategic priorities and dynamic working groups are established to address each priority.

NCRI Pathology Group strategic priorities

  • Identify the challenges of providing cellular and molecular pathology and laboratory medicine support for research in all cancer types and establish a consensus on ‘next generation’ pathology
  • Develop guidelines on reporting of trials (CONSORT-Path)
  • Develop a code of practice to maximise the value extracted from clinical samples
  • Support the development of a research ready workforce
  • Maximise the value and utilisation of pathology images from UK clinical trials by computational methods
  • Establish a costing template for cellular and molecular pathology activity in clinical trials in the UK
  • Promote the development of laboratory medicine diagnostics that can be incorporated into established NHS laboratory medicine working practises

Dr Abhik Mukherjee

Deputy Chair

Dr Abhik Mukherjee studied Medicine and trained in Radiation Oncology at Calcutta University; and completed an MSc and PhD in Oncology from the University of Nottingham. He subsequently trained in Histopathology at Leicester and Nottingham, where he was an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow and Lecturer. After attaining his FRCPath (Histopathology) by exam in 2015, he is currently a Clinical Associate Professor (Honorary Consultant in GI/HPB pathology) at Nottingham University. His research interests are molecular/computational characterisation of lympho-vascular invasion in cancers, and biomarkers in inflammatory bowel disease. He holds/has held project grants from Innovate-UK/MRC, Bowel Research UK, Cancer Research UK, Academy of Medical Sciences and the Pathological Society; and has had the privilege of working on prestigious collaborative projects, [METABRIC: Molecular Taxonomy of the Breast Cancer International Consortium], clinical trials [NEOTANGO, SCOTROC /TRANSCOTROC], and industry-partnered image analyses/computational pathology initiatives [NPIC: Northern Pathology Imaging Collaborative/Roche, UK and with Optimata, Israel, and Barco, Belgium]. He was co-lead on the MRes in Molecular Pathology course for the Nottingham Molecular Pathology Node. He is the current chair of the Education subcommittee of the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland and was part of the NCRI-CMPath Clinical Trials Pathology Advisory Group.
